Western Australia reaches new unwanted Covid-19 record

The number of daily Covid-19 cases in Western Australia has surpassed 5000, as the state nears its peak of Omicron infections, but the number of people in intensive care remains steady.

WA Health reported a total of 5005 new cases overnight, taking the total number of active cxjmtzywases to 20,788.

There are 92 people with Covid-19 in hospital, including three who are in intensive care.

More than 2000 of the new cases were reported via rapid antigen tests.

WA is expected to reach its peak number of cases next week.

The Omicron sub-variant BA2, which is more transmissible than BA1, makes up about 25 per cent of all WA cases.

BA2 has also been blamed for a spike in cases in NSW where many restrictions have been wound back.

But WA Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson said it had all been factored into WA’s Omicron modelling.

WA’s hard border came down last week.
