Victorian Liberals use Ukraine stock footage as part of road campaign

An attempt by the Victorian opposition to highlight the state’s worst roads has backfired in spectacular fashion.

The blunder came as part of a three-month campaign, launched on Tuesday, which asked the public to submit their votes for the state’s worst roads.

But the website set up for Victorians to nominate problem areas used an image of a damaged road that was stock footage of Ukraine.

The clip was filmed before the war in 2019 and is available widely available for use from major generic footage provider, iStock.

The Victorian Liberals explained the blunder in a statement, saying “stock footage was used as a starting point but it’s since been replaced”.

The party’s leader Matthew Guy, who has Ukrainian heritage, said the campaign was initially aimed to draw attention to the state’s road toll and its “potholed” streets.

“Meanwhile, the Andrews Labor Government has found more than $24 billion to pour into plugging its cost overruns on poorly managed major projects.”
