Tristan Sailor: Ex-NRL player to stand trial over alleged rape

The long-awaited trial of a former NRL player charged with the rape of a woman is due to commence in Sydney this week.

Tristan Sailor, 23, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of aggravated sexual assault inflicting actual bodily harm on a woman known to him in October 2020.

The former St George Illawarra Dragons player, and son of ex-Wallabies and Kangaroos star Wendell Sailor, is alleged to have injured the woman during the assaults which took place at a home in Sydney’s south.

Mr Sailor junior was arrested at a home in Wollongong on October 10, 2020 by police who allege they seized numerous items relevant to their investigation.

After vowing to fight the charges in June last year, Mr Sailor junior was ordered to stand trial in the NSW District Court.

The trial was due to commence on Monday, however the court heard up to one day was needed to resolve pre-trial arguments between the Crown and defence.

A jury to decide Mr Sailor junior’s fate is now set to be empaneled xjmtzywon Wednesday morning.

The trial is expected to last up to three weeks.

After making his NRL debut in late 2019, Mr Sailor junior played five games for St George. He was stood down by the NRL before his contract ended in October 2020.
