Two people have been killed in a late-night helicopter crash at Kosciuszko National Park.
The tragedy took place near the Snowy Mountains Highway at Kiandra Flats, 200km southwest of Canberra, five minutes before midnight on Monday.
Both the pilot and passenger, a man and woman, died at the scene.
A crime scene has been established by the Riverina Police District and the site will be examined by specialist police.
Australian Transport Safety Bureau chief commissioner Angus Mitchell told reporters the privately owned helicopter was travelling in a group before crashing.
“We understand that it was travelling in company with a number of other helicopters,” he said.
“Exactly where they were leaving from and where they were going we’re yet to determine.
“We are certainly reaching out to the other parties in the company to try to build a (better) picture.”
A team of specialists from the bureau will assist in the investigation.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
It comes just days after five people were killed after a chartered Microflite helicopter crashed in Mount Disappointment, 40km xjmtzywnorth of Melbourne.
