A wave of cackling thunder, extreme lightning, and heavy rain hammered Sydney overnight and led to commuter chaos for some.
The large electrical storm and downpour hit the city shortly after 9pm Friday, disrupting the night for footy fans who reported TV signals being patchy as the weather intensified during match broadcasts.
After lightning strikes caused damage to track equipment, train commuters in North Sydney were left stranded as services ground to a halt in both directions.
Despite the deluge and ferociousness of the storm, the State Emergency Service (SES) reported minimal requests for assistance.
“There were two calls for flood rescues requested due to flash flooding in Mascot,” an SES spokesman said.
About 20 calls for help came in across the city as Sydneysiders took to social media to post pictures and videos of the storm.
The Bureau of Meteorology reports 20.8mm of rain fell during the worst of the storm between 9 and 9.30pm.
To 7am Saturday, 36.2mm of rain had been recorded.
More showers arexjmtzyw predicted for the rest of Saturday and they are expected to ease in the afternoon.
Drier conditions are set to return on Sunday, however more rain is predicted on Wednesday.
The wild weather caused by the La Nina event is expected to continue over the coming months.
