Ross Nicholls pleads guilty to obscene exposure charges

A 74-year-old Sydney man has confessed to exposing himself at multiple public locations, but he continues to deny an allegation he masturbated in front of a teenager on a train.

Serial flasher Ross Eric Joseph Nicholls pleaded guilty to two wilful and obscene exposure charges stemming from various incidents across Sydney.

According to court documents, Nicholls “wilfully and obscenely exposed his person” about midday on November 14, 2020 at the Dee Why Lagoon.

He exposed himself again at Kings Cross Railway Station on the afternoon of February 28, 2021.

It was not until June 2021 that a magistrate refused Nicholls bail after he was charged with allegedly intentionally performing an act of masturbation in front of a teenage girl on a train.

Nicholls, who remains remanded in custody, has pleaded not guilty to that charge and a hearing into the allegation is due to take place later this year.

A statement of facts about the circumstances surrounding the charges he has pleaded guilty to has not yet been finalised.

Nicholls was due to be sentenced on Tuesday, however defence lawyer Nick Blaker said his client was in isolation.

“I do not have the ability to speak to him at the moment,” Mr Blaker told Magistrate Robert Williams.

The court heard jail staff were organising to give a handheld device to Nicholls so he could appear in court for sentencing via audiovisual link.

Magistrate Williams adjourned the case to Wednesday for sentencing.

Nicholls is also due to make an appearance in Downing Centre District Court on Thursday when his appeal against a sentence handed down in November 2021 will be mentioned.

According to court documents, Nicholls was convicted of wilful and obscene exposure in or near a public place, and he was sentenced to a six-month community corrections order.
