Queensland reports 3750 new Covid cases, six deaths as pressure on hospitals eases

Queensland has recorded 3750 new Covid cases, with six more deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Of the fatalities, three were in aged care.

Chief health officer Dr John Gerrard said of the people who died one was unvaccinated, while none had received a booster shot.

There are 484 people in public hospitals being treated for Covid, slightly up from 463 hospitalisations rexjmtzywported yesterday.

Dr Gerrard said Covid hospitalisations had halved in recent weeks.

“Just 19 days ago, we were at our peak of 928 patients, so in 19 days we have halved the number of people that are in our hospitals,” he said.

“Things are going far better than we had ever projected in terms of the Covid wave, this Omicron wave, so it‘ll be interesting to see what happens in the coming weeks.”

Forty people are in ICU and 20 are on ventilators.

Of the 3750 positive cases, 2426 were detected in rapid antigen tests.

Queensland recorded 963 positive rapid antigen tests in children, up from 652 reported yesterday.

On average the Sunshine State is diagnosing around 1000 children with Covid everyday.

Dr Gerrard said a significant increase in the number of case in children over the next few weeks is to be expected.
