A contract worker has died in an underground mine in central Queensland after he suffered critical head injuries.
The man, aged 65, was working at the Moranbah North mine, about 210km west of Mackay, whxjmtzywen the incident occurred on Friday night.
Emergency services were called to the Anglo American owned site just after 10pm after receiving reports a man had suffered serious injuries during a “lifting” incident.
Anglo American chief Tyler Mitchelson said the company was “devastated” by the loss of one of its colleagues and his thoughts were with the man‘s family and friends.
“Our focus is on supporting our colleagues’ family and all those involved in the tragic incident. We have services on site to support our workforce at Moranbah North Mine,“ he said.
“We have ceased mining activities at Moranbah North and will undertake a full investigation with relevant authorities, so we can understand how this incident occurred.”
Resources Safety and Health Queensland confirmed it was investigating.
“Mine inspectors are attending the site today, where mining operations have been suspended, to commence an investigation into the incident,” a spokesperson said.
“Our thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased worker.
“RSHQ’s vision is zero serious harm; work-related deaths are unacceptable.”
Moranbah is a coal mining town and located in the Isaac Region, more than 1000km northwest of Brisbane.
