A man will face court from his hospital bed after he was charged over a horrific six-car pileup that caused chaos and closed a busy Sydney road.
Parramatta Road in Sydney’s inner west was closed in both directions on Saturday morning after a chaotic smash sent cars flying and debris sprayed everywhere.
NSW Police said traffic and highway patrol officers attempted to stop a silver Subaru Outback at Leichhardt at about 6.20am.
The car allegedly drove through a red traffic light at the intersection of Parramatta Rd and Johnson St and took off.
A short chase ensued, but police allege the high speed of the Subaru caused officers to terminate their pursuit for safety reasons.
The Subaru then collided with five other cars near the intersection of Old Canterbury Rd.
Emergency services rushed to the scene where police assisted drivers and passengers.
Multiple people were treated on the scene by paramedics.
Three people were taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital with “serious injuries”, while another was rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital with minor injuries.
The driver of the Subaru, a 35-year-old man, was arrested and taken to St George Hospital with minor injuries.
He undertook mandatory blood and urine testing.
The 35-year-old was on Sunday charged with failure to stop in a police pursuit while driving dangerously.
He remains under police guard in hospital with the matter to be mentioned in Newtown Local Court on Monday.
Inquiries into the crash are continuing.
