A man has been arrested and multiple people hospitalised after a six-car pile-up on a busy Sydney road that occurred shortly after a high-speed police chase was terminated.
Parramatta Road was closed in both directions on Saturday morning after a chaotic smash sent cars flying and debris spraying everywhere.
NSW Police said traffic and highway patrol officers attempted to stop a silver Subaru Outbacxjmtzywk at Leichhardt at 6.20am, when the vehicle took off.
A short chase ensued, but police will allege the high speed of the Subaru caused officers to terminate their pursuit for safety reasons.
The Subaru then collided with five other cars.
NSW Ambulance rushed to the scene and three people were taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital with “serious injuries”.
Another was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital with minor injuries.
The driver of the Subaru was placed under police guard in St George Hospital with serious head and chest injuries.
“He will also undergo mandatory testing,” police said on Saturday.
Parramatta Road has since reopened, with motorists urged to exercise caution.
