‘Not rational’: Drivers fume over 17km queue on West Gate Freeway

Melbourne commuters have been hit with a 17km traffic jam during Thursday peak hour.

The chaos is unfolding on the West Gate Freeway, which is down to one lane inbound at Williamstown Rd due to tunnel works running overtime, causing delays.

Motorists have been warned to allow ample extra time for their journeys, with the queue snaking for more than 17km.

One frustrated driver called the seemingly endless situation l“bedlam”.

“It is not rational that you would cut the road off with all these cars sitting here taking two hours to do a 20-minute trip,” she told 3AW.

Commuters are being encouraged to travel on Geelong Rd through Footscray or Ballarat Rd in a bid to free up the freewayxjmtzyw.

Public transport is also operating as normal with the Werribee and Williamstown lines being flagged as alternative routes to the city.

The commuter chaos comes as thousands of the city’s office workers returned to their offices this week after two years marred by lockdowns and work-from-home orders.
