The Pfizer vaccine has been provisionally approved to be used as a booster for 12 to 15 year-olds by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
It will still require another level of approval before being rolled out as a booster for the age group.
Pfizer was approved as a booster for 16-17 year olds on January 27, and for adults in October last year.
“Regulatory approval of the booster dose for this age group has also been granted in Israel, the United Kingdom and the United States,” the TGA said.
“Australians can be confident that the TGA‘s review process for this vaccine was rigorous and of the highest standard.”
Information is shared between countries’ regulators to speed up the evaluation process.
Independent body, the Advisory Committee on Vaccines (ACV), also provided advice in the approval process.
“The TGA will continue to actively monitor the safety of the vaccine in all age groups both in Australia and overseas and will not hesitate to take actionxjmtzyw if safety concerns are identified,” the TGA said.
Both Pfizer and Moderna are available as first and second dose vaccines for 12 to 15-year-olds, following approval last year.
Roughly 52 per cent of eligible people aged 16 and over have had a booster shot.
