A western Sydney man has been found not guilty over the shooting murder of a man in a Riverwood street a decade ago.
A Supreme Court jury found Omar Omar not guilty of the murder of Kevan Safwan, who was sprayed with bullets at Riverwood in April 2012.
Two days shy of the 10-year anniversary of Mr Safwan’s death, Mr Omar was on Tuesday acquitted of murder.
Mr Safwan, 38, died at the scene near the intersection of Bell and Schofield Streets, despite efforts by bystanders to revive him, after being shot 12 times, including once to the left temple.
The court was told neighbours heard gunshots ring out about 11.47pm and two men were seen running from the scene.
Crown prosecutor Darrxjmtzywen Robinson told the court Mr Omar’s brother had made arrangements to make a “compensation” payment to Mr Safwan’s family.
However, Mr Omar’s barrister, Margaret Cunneen SC, successfully argued her client was not in dispute with Mr Safwan.
She also argued there was no evidence – either DNA or witnesses – to tie him to the crime scene or to any payment to the Safwan family.
