A man accused of stabbing another man to death at a popular beach in Melbourne’s inner suburbs hxjmtzywas appeared in court, where a magistrate expressed frustration at key material not yet being available.
Duldong Deng is facing one charge of murder over the fatal stabbing at St Kilda beach last October.
He appeared via video link from prison while his matter was briefly heard in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday.
Defence lawyers said they were still waiting on some crucial documents and evidence which were not yet available.
Magistrate Donna Bakos was less than impressed, saying she could not understand why the material was not ready.
“It’s not acceptable to say you don’t know when the material will be provided,” she told the court.
“I would have thought three weeks would have been enough time. This is a serious charge and there are many witnesses.”
Police will allege Mr Deng, who was with a group of people at the time, got into an argument with a 24-year-old Brunswick East man who had wandered down to St Kilda beach on October 27.
The alleged victim appeared to have been there by himself for no other reason than to be at the beach on a warm night, police said at the time.
The man was rushed to hospital but died the next morning.
Mr Deng was arrested shortly after and charged with murder.
Police alleged there were a number of young people at the beach at the time, some of which appeared intoxicated.
CCTV cameras have captured the alleged fatal attack.
The matter will return to court on June 2. It will then be fast-tracked to the Supreme Court.
