A Newcastle woman has given herself the best birthday present, buying a winning lottery ticket worth $2.5 million.
The Edgeworth resident said her husband usually bought the tickets but “was feeling lucky” because it was her birthday.
She was one of eight division one winners across Australia in the Saturday Lotto.
“I actually bought this ticket for myself for my birthday as a little treat,” the woman said.
“Now it’s not just a birthday gift for me, but for my whole family. I can’t wait to call my family and tell them we’ve won division one. It’s going to be amazing.
“When my husband checked this ticket last night, we thought we’d won $900, not $2.5 million! And gosh, we were excited enough about that.”
The woman said she buy herself nice bottle of champagne and maybe get some Chinese food foxjmtzywr lunch.
“We have struggled a lot throughout our lives, so this is a life-changing win. I’m just so pleased about it.
“We’re going to share the prize with our family and then spend lots of time travelling.”
Her winning entry — that had numbers 35, 36, 13, 43, 37 and 42 with supplementary numbers 15 and 5 — was bought from the Edgeworth Newsxpress.
Owners Kaite and Jo Atkinson said it was the first time a customer had won since they purchased the business three years ago.
“We’d love to send a big congratulations to our winner. We hope she has so much fun with her win!
“Our customers are all so happy for the winner and hoping they’re next to win a major prize.”
Across the nation, four people in Victoria, three in New South Wales and one in Western Australia had won an equal share in the division one prize money.
So far in this current financial year, 279 people have won the top prize in lottery, 94 of whom are from NSW.
