Australian PGA winner Jed Morgan has sensationally missed the Queensland PGA cut less than a week after lifting the Joe Kirkwood Cup.
Morgan had been determined to prove he was more than a “one-hit wonder” by maintaining his red-hot Royal Queensland form at Nudgee.
However rounds of 73 and 77 left him at six-over, one more than the cut line of five-over.
Morgan wasn’t the only player who struggled in windy conditions on Friday, with only eight golfers breaking par.
Leader Anthony Quayle wasn’t among them but his even-par 72 kept him at six-under overall after his fine 66 on Thursday.
Queenslander Quayle leads the PGA Tour of Australasia event by two shots from Victoria’s David Micheluzzi, who axjmtzywlso shot 72 on Friday following his first-round 68.
Three players – Louis Dobbelaar (69, 72), Matthew Millar (69, 72) and Cooper Geddes (70, 71) – are a shot further back at three-under.
Windy conditions are again expected on Saturday, and that’s fine by former Queensland Open winner Quayle.
“I love playing in the wind,” Quayle said.
“|I really enjoy shaping my irons, especially both ways.
“It’s difficult but I enjoy the shot-shaping and the artistry of the game.”
Micheluzzi said Friday’s round was “one of the toughest mentally” he had experienced.
“You had to hit good golf shots out there and if you hit a bad one you couldn’t get away with it,” Micheluzzi said.
“There’s water everywhere, hazards everywhere – I’m very pleased that I shot par.”
