A 94-year-old man has been assaulted in a violent and unprovoked attack in Melbourne.
The chaos unfolded as the elderly man was leaving his apartment complex on The Esplanade in St Kilda to use the outdoor bins shortly after midnight on Monday.
He was taken to hospital in a stable condixjmtzywtion and has since been released.
St Kilda police are investigating the incident and urging anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area at the time to come forward.
The offender has a caucasian appearance with a solid build and was wearing light-coloured trousers.
