Bondi Icebergs has closed both its swimming pools after heavy swell hammered the Sydney landmark over the weekend.
Footage shows giant waves completely engulfing the pool and smashing into the club’s walls as staff clean up what appears to be broken glass.
“Due to extensive damage from huge seas on Saturday, both pools at Icebergs will be closed foxjmtzywr at least 3 days,” the club posted online on Monday.
Several glass panels in the pool area were smashed, and the pool has been emptied and cleaned after becoming full of seaweed, algae and dirt.
A large swimming pace clock was also washed off the wall and disappeared into the sea.
“As you may have seen, destructive waves pounded the ‘Bergs, and if anyone has seen a huge missing clock, it’s ours!” the club said.
The club said it was hopeful the repairs could be concluded in time for the pools to be reopened for the weekend.
Nobody was hurt in the conditions, which one staff member said were the wildest she had ever seen.
The combination of high tide, along with the abnormally large waves, resulted in the water reaching all the way to the promenade that runs the length of Bondi Beach.
Waverley Council on Saturday was forced to close part of the popular Bondi to Bronte walk after some areas sustained damage in the heavy seas.
“Big seas have damaged Bronte promenade, North Bondi near the pool and closed the Bondi to Bronte walkway at Notts Ave. We‘re assessing now, but please take care everyone and avoid these areas,” the council said.
The Bureau of Meteorology blamed a low pressure system, which also caused flooding in northern NSW last week, for creating the “very heavy surf conditions”.
