A Queensland business is serving up free warm doughnuts to “anyone who rocks up” in a bid to raise funds for those impacted by the floods.
OMG! Decadent Donuts, located in northwest Brisbane, has pledged to give away fresh doughnuts to those who donate to Orange Sky Australia.
The Brisbane-based charity, which provides a free mobile laundry service for people experiencing homelessness, has put its hand up to wash muddy clothes for flood victims.
OMG! Decadent Donuts co-owner David Moore told Neil Breen on Monday morning that the business was on a mission to raise $10,000 before the end of the week.
“We sort of sat down and realised that we had to do something, we had to do something,” he said.
“You know, it‘s just a little doughnuts shop in Ascot that makes amazing doughnuts, but the power of a doughnut is incredible.”
The community has banded together to raise around $1500 since the shop began pumping out the sugary goodness on Sunday.
“People come in, they donate, we give them free doughnuts and we just put it all through to Orange Sky straight away!” Mr Moore said.
The delicious treats can be found at 31 Alexandra Rd, Ascot.
The charitable donation follows after the store was inundated with more than a metre of floodwater just under a week ago.
This is the second flood the store has endured after relocating to higher ground following the 2011 floods.
Mr Moore thanked his extensive flood experience for the shop’s timely clean-up and reopening.
“I’ve been practising cleaning up after floods for a decade, so it was a no-brainer for me.” he said.
Queensland charities are calling for volunteers to help with flood relief efforts as the disaster continues to unfold.
Orange Sky spokesperson Anne Deitch said volunteers on the ground had been working tirelessly to raise funds to help communities feel “half alive” through clean clothes, warm showers and friendly conversation.
“One lady yesterday in Ipswich, she had the clothes she stood up in, that was all she had,” Ms Deitch said.
