Two men have charged with the murder of notorious Sydney underworld figure Mejid Hamzy.
Mr Hamzy was found with multiple gunshot wounds outside his home in Condell Park on October 19, 2020, and died at the scene.
He was the brother of alleged crime boss Bassam Hamzy and his death triggered a period of escalating gun violence in Sydney’s underworld.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Darren Bennett said on Thursday police were on their way to wiping out those involved in gangland violence across Sydney
“Earlier this year we ran Operation Hawk with a very clear objective of taking out the henchmen of criminal syndicates operating within Sydney – and we did so with devastating success,” Mr Bennet said.
“Today marks the beginning of a new operational phase where police will methodically begin locking up those responsible for the execution style killings that followed this Condell Park murder.”
Two other men were previously charged in relation to the investigation and remain before the courts.
Following further inquiries, detectives carried out four search warrants early on Thursday morning.
Footage shows Tactical Operations Unit (TOU) officers swooping on homes in East Hills, Panania, Bankstown and Padstow.
Three men – aged 28, 30, and 34 – were arrested and taken to Bankstown Police Station.
Police also seized cash, clothing and other items relevant to the investigation.
The 34-year-old East Hills man and 30-year-old Panania man were each charged with murder, supply prohibited drug more than large commercial quantity, and participate criminal group contribute criminal activity.
Police will allege both men shot Mejid Hamzy at Condell Park in 2020.
The 28-year-old Bankstown man was charged with supply prohibited drug more than large commercial quantity, two counts of knowingly deal with proceeds of crime, and participate criminal group contribute criminal activity.
Detective Superintendent Grant Taylor told reporters it was now thought Mr Hamzy’s murder was linked to the alleged theft of a large stash of narcotics that were imported into Australia.
“We will be alleging that the murder of Mejid Hamzy was sanctioned at the highest levels of international organised crime,” he said.
All three men arrested on Thursday were refused bail to appear at Bankstown Local Court.
