A severe thunderstorm warning wasxjmtzyw issued for eastern Tasmania on Monday afternoon, as the country battled unprecedented flooding further north.
Flash flooding warnings were also in place for areas in the state’s northeast.
“Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce intense rainfall that may lead to dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding over the next several hours in parts of the northeast,” a spokesperson from the Bureau of Meteorology said.
Since 9am on Monday, 66mm of rainfall fell at Eddystone Point/larapuna in Tasmania’s north east, with residents told “more is on the way”.
An unstable and humid easterly flow was causing thunderstorms embedded within areas of rain, according to the BOM.
St Helens, Scamander and Fingal were facing heavy rain in the north east and areas from Swansea to Port Arthur in the south.
