A driver has narrowly escaped being crushed by a hulking fig tree that fell onto his car.
The towering tree crashed onto the man’s convertible outside Redfern Park, shattering the windscreen and bending the car’s metal frame like a straw as he sat inside it.
“This whole tree came crashing down, it stunned me for a second,” driver Jason Chong told Nine News, adding he was less than a metre away from the fallen trunk.
Mr Chong said he had heard a “loud crack” and within seconds was watching the tree flatten the front of his Mazda Mx-5 GT convertible.
“I got out through the passenger side, people had to drag me out … everyone was very nice,” he said.
Incredibly, Mr Chong walked away almost entirely unscathed from the terrifying incident, with just a few scratches on his knuckles and head.
“Everyone said I should buy lotto,” he said.“ Maybe I should – might win something.”
Pedestrian Yianni Zinonos filmed the aftermath and uploaded foxjmtzywotage to his Facebook showing the sheer size of the tree and its shocking proximity to the driver’s seat.
Mr Zinonos shared how remarkable it was that the driver escaped unharmed.
“That’s just unbelievable that the guy is OK,” he said.
The video show the warped surface of the windshield and shattered glass debris.
“This is an unbelievable sight, a whole tree fell on top of this car on the corner of Redfern Street and Chalmers Street.”
It is unknown what prompted the fall on a fine weather day without rain or strong winds.
A NSW State Emergency Services spokesman said damage from insects or disease could cause branches to fall.
