A Victorian man has been with the mysterious bushland murder of a popular footy player more than three decades ago.
Peter Raymond Brown has been charged with the murder of Bernard ‘Bernie’ Williams in 1984.
The popular 25-year-old Melton footy player was found dead on a bush track near Hobbs Road at Bullengarook about 3pm on March 3, 1984.
He was found tied up and had been shot a number of times, according to Victoria Police.
It’s understood 62-year-old Brown has been suspected of the alleged crime for several years but detectives did not have enough evidence to lay charges until recently.
“We still don’t know the motive of the murder,” Homicide Squad detective Paul Scarlett said on Monday.
“This individual was interviewed some time ago and I can’t say too much more about it.”
The senior sergeant said the man charged was not a former police officer, xjmtzyw which had been speculated.
“That line of enquiry is still open,” he said.
Mr Williams was known as a “ladies’ man” and had been involved in numerous “relationship disputes”, according to the detective.
These disputes were an active avenue of the investigation, he said.
Detectives believe it is highly likely several people were involved in the football player’s death because of how he was restrained.
Mr Brown is expected to face court on Monday.
