Chaos as trucks catch fire near WA border crossing

Chaos has erupted on the West Australia border after four trucks were engulfed by flames.

The incident unfolded on Monday afternoon near the Border Village Roadhouse on the Eyre Highway, on the South Australian part of the Nullarbor Plain.

Images of the scene show dense black smoke billowing from the trucks parked just metres from a Covid testing site.

West Australian Police Commissioner Chris Dawson said there were no reports of injuries.

Due to the distance from SA emergency services, fire crews from Western Australia were on scene to extinguish the blaze.

At least four trucks caught alight in the shocking inferno.

Motorists have been urged to approach the area with caution.

Mr Dawson said he did not yet know what started the fire, but overheated brakes were one of the possibilities.

“The truck situation appears to be under control, although the trucks are on fire,” he said.

“It doesn’t appear to be anything sinister at this stage.”
