An urgent bushfire warning has been issued for residents in Western Australia’s Bunbury region, who are being told they must act immediately to survive.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has issued the emergency warning for parts of Wellesley in the Shire of Harvey after the blaze ignited at 2am.
“Homes in Wellesley Road North and Bernbrooke Place are under threat by fire now,” Emergency WA said in a statement on Saturday.
“You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive.
“There is a threat to lives and homes.”
About 60 firefighters are battling the out-of-control blaze, which is unpredictable and moving south.
Spot fires are igniting up to 50 metres ahead of the inferno and burning embers are likely to be blown around houses, authorities said.
Aerial support has been sent to protect crews and homes.
Meanwhile, residents are being warned they must leave now for a safer place if the path is clear.
“Do not wait and see, leaving at the last minute is deadly,” the authority urged.
Those who cannot leave are advised to get ready to shelter inside their home.
Motorists are asked to avoid the area, reduce speed and drive carefully due to the smoke.
