Residents in Melbourne’s north are celebrating, after efforts to ban a new Bunnings from their inner-city enclave ruled in their favour.
The victory came after VCAT threw out Bunnings’ plans for a store xjmtzywon Glenlyon Rd, a primarily residential area, on Friday night.
Residents had raised more than $40,000 to fight the retail giant in the hope of stopping the new store.
The original $21 million plan would have seen the Chamton building on Glenlyon Road demolished and replaced with a two-storey store that backed onto Pitt Street.
However, a total of 538 objections were fielded and 50 locals banded together to face Bunnings in the tribunal.
Local organiser Andrea Bunting vented her frustration to media during the campaign, saying the mammoth building would overshadow homes on the same street.
“It’s a huge, visually bulky development,” she said.
“We can’t find any other Bunnings that’s almost completely surrounded by homes. This is just unprecedented.”
Bunnings Australia has been contacted for comment.
