Harrowing CCTV footage has shown the moment a heartless thief allegedly stole a new mum’s car with her baby boy inside.
The shocking moment took place at Keysborough in Melbourne’s southeast on Tuesday at around 2.10pm.
Police allege the 11-month-old’s mother had briefly left the vehicle and had the engine running when the thief saw his opportunity and sped off.
A massive police effort ensued before the car and baby were found in Cranbourne about 5.40pm after a member of the public made a report to police.
Police said on Tuesday night they had arrested a 46-year-old Frankston man over the alleged incident.
He is assisting police with their inquiries, and investigations are ongoing.
The boy has since been reunited with his family.
The nightmare unfolded when the 11-month old boy’s mother pulled over on Tuesday afternoon and left the vehicle running in Putt Grove.
Police allege an unknown man hopped into the vehicle and stole it with the boy still inside.
An extensive search involving the police chopper tried to find the car as the “distressed” parents waited for good news.
“As you can imagine, when their 11-month-old baby is missing, they are very distressed,” Inspector Fiona Halford told reporters.
She said they’d be crying “tears of joy” after the good news their boy was found safe and well.
