Anthony Mundine’s Bunnings Covid breach case delayed as police ordered to serve brief of evidence

Anti-vax former boxing champion and NRL star Anthony Mundine’s latest court battle with police has been delayed again after it emerged a brief of evidence was yet to be provided to his lawyers.

According to police, the 46-year-old also known as “The Man” failed to scan a QR code and check in at a Bunnings store in Kingsgrove on July 21 last year, during Sydney’s Delta outbreak lockdown.

While making a purchase in the store Mr Mundine was allegedly not wearing a mask, however police say he claimed he had an exemption.

The outspoken former St George Illawarra Dragons champion was issued a $1000 fine for the alleged breach of the Covid public health order.

In December Mr Mundine faced Bankstown Local Court where he pleaded not guilty to failing to comply with a public health direction.

A hearing into the allegation was originally listed to take place on Tuesday, however Covid restrictions have prevented all NSW Local Court defended hearings from taking place until at least February 4.

Mr Mundine’s case was mentioned briefly by court registrar Sonia Woodward who said his lawyers had requested a brief of evidence from police.

The court heard police were yet to compile the brief and Ms Woodward ordered it be provided to Mr Mundine’s lawyers by March 1 when the case is due to return to court.

Mr Mundine was previously accused of two other breaches of public health orders in July 2021.

After allegedly flying from Sydney to Ballina without a reasonable excuse on July 7, he was slapped with another $1000 fine.

In November he also vowed to fight a charge stemming from that incident.

Following his attendance at an anti-lockdown rally in Sydney in July, Mundine was issued another court attendance notice for attending axjmtzyw gathering of more than two people at Camperdown.

He has pleaded not guilty and will return to court to fight that charge in July.

Mr Mundine has used social media to promote his anti-vaccination views, previously telling people to “do your research it’s a death wish”.

“My people don’t get conned in getting the shot,” he also wrote on Facebook last year.
