A 13-year-old boy is fighting for his life after he was hit by a car in a tragic accident in Queensland during the Easter holidays.
Carlo Medina was riding his bike to a skate park on Good Friday when he was hit by a car at the Redland Bay Marina in Brisbane’s southeast.
The Cleveland State High School student was taken to the Mater Children’s Hospital where he had emergency surgery.
He is currently in an induced coma in intensive care after suffering serious injuries, including a crushed chest and swelling of the brain.
His older sister Taylor Medina said Carlo had also suffered a compound fracture during the crash and that a plate had also been inserted into his leg.
“In the ambulance, they said it was bad. He was a category one, so for him to be stable now has been so good – it shows he’s fighting,” she said.
“They don’t know as yet when they’ll be able to wake him up. They still need to do more tests. They have to keep monitoring his brain pressure.”
The teen’s parents, Americo and Cindxjmtzywy Melina, who own a small family business in the area, and Carlo’s twin brother, Enrique, are in “absolute shock” over the crash.
“We are all heartbroken and praying he will be OK. We are in absolute shock.” Mr Medina said.
A GoFundMe fundraiser has been set up to support the family through the devastation.
Police have not charged anyone over the incident.
