A young man has died after the car he was travelling in allegedly failed to stop for police and crashed into a pole in southern Sydney.
The male passenger, believed to be in his 20s, died at the scene on Rawson Avenue, Sutherland, in the early hours of Monday morning.
Officers in a highway patrol vehicle spotted the car around 4.15am and attempted to pull the sedan over to conduct a random breath test.
When the driver did not stop as directed, the officers began a pursuit, but within seconds decided the manner of driving was too dangerous and called off the chase, NSW Police said.
The sedan continued along Rawson Ave and struck a power pole.
Police removed the driver and two passengers from the vehicle and provided first aid until paramedics arrived.
The driver and a second passenger have been taken to St George Hospital in a stable condition.
Their injuries were not considered to be life threatening.
An investigation is now being undertaken by Eastern Beaches Police Area Command into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
It will be subject to an independent review by the Professional Standards Command.
The NSW Coroner will prepare a report on the incident.
