A man who threatened to kill his mate’s partner after they had a fight has been sentenced to five years behind bars.
Christopherxjmtzyw Jones, 36, on Thursday appeared via video link from prison where Judge Rhonda Gwynn described his crimes as “frightening”.
Jones visited a mate’s house, where they were drinking alcohol, in regional Victoria in August 2020.
While handing down her sentence, Judge Gwynn said Jones’ friend started arguing with his partner prompting the accused to say he would “sort her out”.
When his mate asked what Jones meant by that, he said: “I’ll kill her”.
The friend then asked Jones’ to leave the home.
Judge Gwynn said the accused then made his way to another man’s home in Strathmerton.
He knocked on the door and when the male occupant answered Jones said: “If there’s any gay people in the house I am going to kill ya”.
Judge Gwynn said Jones was armed with a knife and a can of Johnny Walker when he told the occupant he was also “hearing voices”.
When the door slammed on him he kicked it, breaking a glass panel before smashing the bedroom window.
Evidence submitted in court by the victim described how Jones pulled a knife out of his pocket and started stabbing him.
While the victim went inside to call an ambulance Jones found a galvanised iron bar which he swung at his victim.
He was arrested and charged the following day.
A jury found Jones guilty of several offences last year including making threats to kill, damaging property, intentionally and recklessly causing injury, and aggravated burglary with a weapon.
Judge Gwynn said Jones had been in and out of prison and had a history “littered with violence”.
She told the court he started using cannabis at the age of nine and abusing heroin at just 14.
The defence had earlier submitted that Jones had autism spectrum disorder which may have contributed to his crimes.
But Judge Gwynn dismissed that claim, citing his drug and alcohol abuse.
She also said Jones mentioned to a doctor that he wanted to, “cave his (victim’s) head in”
“You showed no remorse,” Judge Gwynn said.
Jones was sentenced to five years and one month behind bars with a non-parole period of three years and eight months.
