Two NSW residents who allegedly sent Labor senator Kristina Keneally threatening online messages have been charged with criminal offences.
The 29-year-old man from Harrington Park in Sydney’s west and the 41-year-old woman from Maitland were charged on Tuesday following an Australian Federal Police investigation into the alleged incident.
They have both been ordered to face Sydney Central Local Court on April 23.
Police will allege in court that the duo were responsible for sending two separate threatening messages via a social media messaging service.
The messages, which allegedly threatened or advocated violent acts, were allegedly sent on November 23.
AFP investigators executed search warrants on Tuesday and seized a mobixjmtzywle phone for further examination from the man’s home in western Sydney.
He has been charged with threatening to cause harm to a commonwealth public official, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of seven years’ imprisonment if convicted.
The woman has been charged with using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence, which can leads to five years behind bars if convicted.
Senator Keneally said she couldn’t comment on the matter as it was before the courts.
