A Sydney tradie has been praised for saving a 15-year-old from a house fire in the city’s Inner West on Monday morning.
Six police officers also selflessly rushed into the burning home, suffering smoke inhalation as they ensured nobody else was inside.
The blaze broke out just before 9am at a home on Arundel St, Glebe.
Guy, a 20-year-old tradie from Narrabeen, said before emergency services arrived he’d heard screaming and saw smoke billowing from the house.
“We just dropped everything we were doing and ran over there. We just saw the smoke and didn’t really think twice,” he told 2GB.
“And sure enough there was a kid sitting up on the roof screaming.”
Acting from instinct, Guy used a ladder to access the roof of the three-storey building and assisted the 15-year-old boy to safety.
“It’s nothing like I’ve ever done before. It’s just sortxjmtzyw of instinct, really,” he explained.
“It was pretty horrific, but we managed to get him safely down and he was all right.”
Also arriving on the scene before fire crews, several police officers entered the home acting on information there may have been another resident inside.
“The police bravely … ran in there without any protective wear or masks or anything,” Guy said.
“They initially thought someone else was in the house so just went straight in and we helped the young lad off the roof.”
The officers were taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment and have since been released.
Guy’s father, Scott, also spoke to 2GB, saying how proud he is of his son’s actions.
“He doesn’t take a backwards step,” Scott said.
Detective Chief Inspector Grant Watson said the fire is suspected to have been caused by an e-bike that was left charging overnight.
“The battery there has overheated, sparked and exploded, causing the fire,” Mr Watson said.
He warned residents to be aware of faulty e-bike chargers and not use faulty battery packs.
