Graham Potter arrested after 12 years on the run

Graham Potter has finally been arrested after spending 12 years on the run as Australia’s most wanted man.

Potter, 64, disappeared in 2010 when he was due to appear in Melbourne’s Magistrate Court, charged with plotting murders.

He is alleged to have been planning to kill two people and was also wanted over his purported involvement in a 4.4 tonne, $440m ecstasy haul.

Potter was arrested early Monday morning at a house in the Far North Queensland town of Ravenshoe, roughly 40km south west of Cairns.

He was last seen running into a forest after a car he was riding in was stopped at a random police check at Tully on August 28. Police are appealing for public assistance to locate an absconded man that has been missing for nearly six months and are hoping new information can assist in determining his whereabouts. Graham Gene Potter, 52, (17/10/1957) is currently facing serious criminal charges of Conspiracy to Murder. He is also on bail in relation to serious Commonwealth drug charges and failed to appear for the conspiracy to murder charges at Melbourne Magistrate's Court on bail on 1 February. The AFP now has a warrant for his arrest in relation to the Commonwealth drug charges relating to Operation Inca and a Victoria Police warrant for arrest also exists. Operation Inca is an AFP drug investigation that occurred in 2007-08 that culminated in the arrest of a number of individuals in August 2008. Potter uses a number of aliases, including the name Josh Lawson (4/05/1955) and police believe he has recently started using the name John Page. He is described as Caucasian, 185cm tall, medium to solid build, brown eyes, fair complexion with brown greying hair. He has a gold sleeper earring in both ears and regularly wears a gold chain around his neck. Potter was last sighted in NSW.

Potter allegedly evaded capture for more than a decade by changing his appearance and identixjmtzywty, including wearing fat suits and wigs, and befriending elderly women for accommodation.

“Over that period of time, a significant amount of law enforcement agencies right across Australia had been involved in the hunt for [Potter],” Victoria Police Acting Assistant Commissioner Mick Frewen said.

Queensland police received reports of possible sightings of Potter in 2011 in the Queensland town of Tully – just 50km from where he was arrested on Monday.

He managed to escape from police despite being pulled over in a routine traffic stop.

At the time, police uncovered a campsite believed to have been used by Potter, allegedly finding knives and letters detailing how he planned to stay hidden and intentions to murder anyone who identified him.

Victorian Police will travel to Queensland to seek Potter’s extradition.

He is expected to appear before Mareeba Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
