Police are searching for a man who went missing last night from Miami Beach in Queensland.
The 35-year old Southport man was trying to help a rock fisherman who had been knocked over by a wave, according to officers.
He himself was taken up by the swell and disappeared as others watched on helplessly.
“A number of members of the public went to the aid of the fisherman but the male rescuer failed to return to shore,” police said in a statement.
Attempts were made to reach the man but were unsuccessful as he was dragged further out to sea.
Emergency services were called to Lifeguard Tower 22 near Marine Parade around 6pm on Thursday evening.
A land, sea and air search commenced shortly after but attempts to find the man were unsuccessful.
Polair scoured the area, while lifeguards assisted using jet skis and rubber duckies, the Courier Mail reported.
The search resumed at first light on Friday, deploying police boats and all terrain vehicles to sweep the shoreline.
Efforts are ongoing.
