A Melbourne man wheeled his dying friend away in a shopping trolley after he mistakenly shot him in a drug robbery gone wrong.
Norden Wilio went to a Meadow Heights house armed with a shotgun in a bid to steal cannabis with his friend, 28-year-old Ali Ali, in 2019.
Mr Ali went to Wilio’s Broadmeadows home and they set off to their victim’s property in a bid to steal his marijuana on March 4.
But the drug heist went wrong and ended up with Wilio unintentionally shooting his mate and killing 40-year-old Deniz Hasan while the pair struggled outside the Huntly Court property.
Wilio used a shopping trolley to move his dying friend to a house 500m away where he knew the occupants and ran inside for help.
Before he could, Ali tipped out of the cart. When neighbours started to come outside, the shooter fled.
The 26-year-old was found guilty of two counts of murder and attempted armed robbery after a trial in December 2021.
During a pre-sentence hearing in the Supreme Court of Victoria on Thursday, Wilio’s father gave evidence about his son’s early life.
Disability support worker Bashar Wilio told the court that his son could “never sit still”, had to repeat grades in school and would get into fights.
“(He would) always make trouble and never listen,” Mr Wilio told the court.
The dad became emotional at the end of his evidence after asking to speak about the victims’ families and his concerns about seeing his son since he was now 60 years old.
“I don’t know if I’m going to see my son outside again,” Mr Wilio said.
“Everybody is losing,” he said through tears.
The court was previously told the shooter had ADHD and was impulsive.
At the earlier hearing, defence lawyer Peter Chadwick told the court that his client didn’t flee the scene but tried to get help for his friend.
However, this reason was probed by Justice Andrew Tinney.
“Running along the street with, as it turned out, a mortally wounded man, bumping along in a shopping trolley. What sort of way is that to treat a person?” the judge said.
