A couple in an allegedly stolen vehicle have rammed a police barricade, seriously injuring one officer in an attempt to evade capture.
The incident took place around midday on Thursday in a carpark in Melbourne’s Airport West.
Police tracked a vehicle to the area following several smash-grab robberies overnight.
As officers moved in to make the arrests, the couple rammed into three police vehicles that were blocking a down ramp, according to a witness.
“It was unsuccessful and kind of hit a couple of cops in doing so, then they reversed again and then tried to ram through the middle of the two cop cars again,” witness, Chris told 3AW.
“After that seven or eight cops jumped on the car and after that seven or eight cops jumped on the car and tried to smash the windows and pull them out.”
A detective acting sergeant was taken to hospital with a serious leg injury, and the male suspect was also hospitalised with minor injuries.
The couple are believed to have been involved in the smash-grab of a robbery computer store in Millers Road in Altona North about 2am on Thursday.
Earlier that night, a stolen 4-wheel drive and a stolen white van were used in smash-grab burglaries at Glenroy and Fawkner.
The female suspect is assisting police with their inquiries.
