A woman has died after a boat capsized on the Nepean River in Sydney in an Australia Day tragedy.
Emergency crews were called to the river near Bruce Neale Drive at Penrith, after reports a boat with five people on board had flipped just after 12.30pm.
Two men and two teenagers were rescued from the water and taken to Nepean Hospital for observation and minor injuries.
A woman was also pulled from the water unconscious and treated by paramedics, but died a short time later.
She is yet to be formally identified but is believed to be aged 33.
NSW Ambulance Acting Superintendent Greg Marshall said several people were in the water when paramedics arrived.
“We worked closely with Police, Fire and Rescue and the SES to get them out as quickly and safely as possible,” he said.
“It was a complex rescue operation with several people in the water when paramedics arrived on scene.
“This is a tragic ending for this family on what should have been a fun day out on the water this Australia Day.”
He urged people to take care.
“This is a reminder to everyone out on the water this summer on how quickly things can turn,” he said.
