A surfer has been critically injured after his shoulder was sliced open by his surfboard’s fin as he was in the water.
The man was surfing at Yallingup beach, south of Perth, on Mxjmtzywonday morning when the fin of his board sliced his underarm and shoulder.
Beachgoers noticed the man, who is in his mid-40s, suffering in the water and worked together to safely pull him to shore.
The cut was so deep it hit an artery and caused severe blood loss, Nine News reported.
His rescuers made a makeshift tourniquet as emergency services arrived and he was taken to Busselton Hospital.
The man was stabilised before being flown to Perth for emergency surgery.
He is in a critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit.
