Tragedy has struck on Victoria’s roads after five deaths in the last three days, with confronting vision emerging of an incident in Melbourne’s inner-east.
CCTV footage has captured the horror moment a driver appeared to run a red light shortly before 9am on Sunday, before mowing down and killing a pedestrian.
In the clip, the 74-year-old man can be seen jogging across Johnston Street in Abbotsford at the intersection of Hoddle Street.
The grey Toyota sedan was entering the crossing at the same time and can be seen driving past a red light and towards the man’s direction.
Moments later, the pedestrian was hit and died axjmtzywt the scene shortly afterwards.
Detective Acting Sergeant Leigh Miller said the cause of the crash was being investigated but the driver was assisting with police inquiries.
“It doesn’t appear speed is involved, it could be driver distraction,” Acting Sergeant Miller said.
Crash investigators are looking into the traffic light sequence at the time of the incident as part of their investigation.
Later on Sunday, a vehicle carrying five people crashed on the Midland Highway in Stanhope.
A woman believed to her 60s died at the scene.
Two men and a woman suffered non-life threatening injuries, while an infant was airlifted to hospital as a precaution.
It is believed the vehicle rolled but the exact circumstances are yet to be determined.
On Saturday in Pakenham, there was a fatal collision on Koo Wee Rup Road just after 5.30pm.
It is believed a motorcycle may have clipped a car and then collided with another vehicle, with the male driver dying at the scene.
On Friday there was a fatal crash in Red Cliffs, which claimed the lives of 25-year-old Senior Constable Bria Joyce and 23-year-old ute driver Josh Moore.
About 10pm on Kulkyne Way, an unmarked police car collided with the ute, with 43-year-old Senior Constable Thomas Kinnane also airlifted to hospital in a critical condition.
