Horror footage moments before man killed by car in Melbourne

CCTV footage has captured the horror moment a driver appeared to run a red light, moments before mowing down and killing a pedestrian.

The confronting scene took place at Abbotsford in Melbourne’s inner-east on shortly before 9am Sunday morning.

In the clip, the 74-year-old man can be seen jogging across Johnston Street at the intersection of Hoddle Street.

The grey Toyota sedan was entering the crossing at the same time and can be seen driving past a red light and towards the man’s direction.

Moments later, the pedestrian was hit and died at the scene shortly afterwards.

Detective Acting Sergeant Leigh Miller said the cause of the crash was being investigated but the driver was assisting with police inquiries.

“It doesn’t appear speed is involved, it could be driver distraction,” Acting Sergeant Miller said.

Crash investigators are looking into the traffic light sequence at the time of the incident as part of their investigation.
