NSW Police has made an arrest after a three-hour manhunt for an alleged gunman travelling between mid-north coast towns and threatening people.
Police tweeted shortly after 4pm the search for the man was over.
“A man was located and arrested at Bellingen about 4pm,” the statement said.
The police force had earlier warned the Macksville community in a 1.26pm tweet that the man was travelling towards the town.
“A police operation is underway in Macksville, following reports a man armed with a firearm has threatened a number of persons,” the tweet said.
“He is believed to be travelling between Bowraville and Macksville in a gold Mazda 323 with rego WGB 812.”
Police received a number of reports from residents who said they had spotted the car.
By 2.30pm, officers were focused on searching Nambucca Heads for the man.
Forty-five minutes later, the car was said to be travelling north in the areas near Urunga and Coffs Harbour.
By 3.45pm, police had located the car near Bellingen, but the search for the man continued.
One woman wrote in a comment on a police Facebook post she had spotted the car in Nambucca.
“He is in Nambucca now. Just saw him near the school flying past cars on the wrong side of the road,” the woman wrote.
“If you sight the vehicle please do not approach and call triple-0 immediately,” police responded.
It wasn’t clear who the man was or whether the people he allegedly threatened were known to him.
Vehicle registration records show the car is a 1999 sedan and describe the colour as silver.
People were urged to call triple-0 if they saw him.
