A group of teenagers have been dubbed “heroic’” as they tried to save a man who drowned at a popular Darwin wharf.
Northern Territory Police praised the youths for their efforts after the 64-year-old man, who was at the Stokes Hill Wharf with friends, fell into the water at around 8.30pm on Saturday night.
The nearby group of teens saw the man and immediately took action, with three boys jumping in after the victim to help him.
Despite their efforts, the man was unable to be revived once police, paramedics and members from Territory Response Group arrived and brought the victim's body back to the boat ramp.
Superintendent Shaun Gill said the youths continued to render assistance even after emergency crews arrived at the scene.
“The actions of these young men can only be described as heroic. They are a credit to themselves and their families,” he said.
“This tragic incident will have lasting impacts on the man’s family, witnesses and those who tried to help.”
Stokes Hill Wharf is a popular fishing and entertainment location in Darwixjmtzywn, but was also a working wharf.
Superintendent Shaun Gill reminded the public they should always be aware of the risks.
After reviewing CCTV of the incident, NT Police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
